SILENT AUCTION!!  RARE HISTORICAL CAPITOLA PHOTOS!!
SABA c1957    $75.00 minimum bid

The Capitola ballroom was by 1954 far more shabby than chic. Jack Macdonald and his son Brad bought it and created the Saba Nightclub. The venture was flagging within its first few seasons, even though the Macdonalds brought top performers of the Big Band era. Lewis A. Sorensen was persuaded to install Sorensen’s House of Wax, a collection of life-sized wax figures in 1956. Both the Saba and the wax museum burned the following year.

Cliff Avenue curved around the bluff where a park site was located in 1957.  Grand Avenue had not yet eroded along the edge, although the trees of "Lover's Lane" had vanished years before.  This off-season, aerial view above the Saba and the Capitola Theater shows the wide beach that once existed.
