Capitola's 60th Birthday Celebration
Founded in 1875, Capitola was incorporated as a city on January 11th, 1949.  A group of residents got together to organize a day of recognition which has evolved into a birthday party - you all know how Capitola loves a good party!  There are several events planned through 2009, beginning with a cake cutting ceremony that was held on the official birthday at Capitola Mall.
And there is more!
The big event will be held in the heart of Capitola in May.  We are planning a Big Birthday Bash Weekend May 15th - 17th, beginning with a "Brief History of Capitola" event at the New Brighton Center for the Performing Arts on Friday evening.  Sandy Lydon and Carolyn Swift will be sharing their vast knowledge of Capitola.  If you have never been to one of their lectures, I want you to know that this is a must see event - they are both such funny, engaging speakers!  And, as an added bonus, the Santa Cruz Youth Symphony will perform prior to the lecture, and light refreshments will be served.  The rest of the weekend will be one big party in the Village, and in the tradition of the Capitola Begonia Festival, all events on Saturday and Sunday will be fun, family friendly and free!  There will be all sorts of activities, including a concert and a movie, bounce house, dunk tank, a pie eating contest, vintage car parade and more!
